Hurricane Tips

The Emergency Management Departement is closely monitoring the track of Hurricane Irene. Please stay tuned for updates.

You know about preparing your emergency kits…

1.     the getting your flashlights & batteries

2.     water

3.     non-perishable food for family and pets

4.     manual can opener

5.     medicines, eyeglasses, contacts

6.     hygiene items: toilet paper, toothpaste and toothbrush.

7.     paper towels, premoistend towelettes, hand sanitizer & eating utensils.

8.     change of clothing, shoes, rain gear

9.     first-aid kit & manual

10.  blankets, pillows, sleeping bags

11.  radio

12.  two coolers: one for food, the other for ice

13.  games, books, playing cards

14.  Plastic tarp for roof/window repair and tools.

15.  plastic trash bags.

16.  special items for infants, elderly and disabled family members.

 

and here are some other things that you should consider:

 

  1. Write down your insurance company’s claims phone number in case you need it.
  2. Secure buildings on your property by closing and boarding up windows.
  3. Remove outside antennas if it is safe to do so.
  4. Bring in all lawn furniture, outdoor decorations, trash cans, hanging plants, bird feeders and anything else that could be picked up by the wind. Anchor objects that cannot be brought inside.
  5. Turn your refrigerator to its coldest setting.
  6. fill your bathtub, sinks, and other large containers with fresh water. This will serve as a reserve should you be without running water during the storm.
  7. If you must leave your auto outdoors, park as close to a building as possible. Move your car away from trees, poles…that may topple onto it.
  8. Fill your gas tank with gas.
  9. Fill your propane tank for the grill or get a back up in case you need to cook without electricity.
  10. Get some emergency cash.
  11. plan evacuation routes and keep a map in the car.
